Harpreet Grewal
Harpreet Grewal is a proud Edmontonian who has been an integral part of the city’s community for 35 years. Having raised her two sons and daughter in the vibrant and diverse community of Southeast Edmonton, Harpreet feels a deep desire to give back to the community that has shaped her life.
Harpreet understands the relentless stress of living paycheck to paycheck, with little relief in sight. Over the past 22 years, Harpreet balanced her role as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the challenges of single-handedly parenting her children and she knows what it means to make difficult choices—whether to pay for groceries or cover bills. Through these experiences, she has gained an intimate understanding of the struggles families face daily and is determined to create a better future for others. Harpreet believes no one should have to forgo life’s necessities or face impossible decisions just to get by.
Harpreet’s parents immigrated to Canada in the early 1970s when a single income was enough to support an entire family. Today, however, inflation and stagnant wages have forced both parents to work multiple jobs just to stay afloat. Harpreet sees this as a call to action.
Harpreet believes in the idea of *sewa* which means selfless service to others, regardless of who they are. To her, we are all one, and it is our collective responsibility to protect, care for, and advocate for society’s most vulnerable.
Harpreet is inspired by the NDP’s efforts to support families. NDP initiatives like free dental care for seniors and children, life-saving diabetic supplies, and access to contraception for women, Harpreet believes, are just the beginning of what can be achieved when we prioritize compassion and equity in our communities. Now is the time to expand these initiatives and lower grocery prices, lower the price of owning a home, make affordable housing more available and increase protections for workers.
